The Beaver Hose This is the latest piece of ‘must-have’ equipment from the cognoscenti. It is a pumping device and works on the age-old principle of gravity, so simplicity itself: no plumbing, no valves, no electric circuitry. It does come with various add-ons, including extension hoses: one of 183 cms (or 6 ft in old money!). Sadly it is not yet available here but it can be ordered via the web (see below). So what are its uses? It is ideally suited for camping trips, canoeing, long distance hikes, outdoor winter activities, skiing and trips abroad. It can be easily stowed and cleaned. Simplicity itself to use after initial trials (a little practice makes perfect) when it will become a treasured piece of personal gear. Trust me: you will never lend this to even your best friend! Should there be sufficient interest there is a suggestion that we might produce a handout, or a technical workshop could be offered at the next rally. In emergencies it can be operated by both men and women, though women are amazingly adept as no extra strength is needed. It has certain magical properties: it works beautifully during the day but superbly at night; it can be operated from a vertical position but, with practice from an horizontal attitude; and wonder of wonders, you don’t even need to get out of your sleeping bag!
