A Note on Dutch Ovens etc.
You will probably have noticed that Dutch Ovens are mentioned fairly frequently in the sorts of menus we are describing here. There are a good number of variations in the basic design but the type we tend to use are about 10” in diameter, without legs on the base, and with a heavy rim around the top of the lid. This design allows it to be balanced on a stove; it also allows hot embers or charcoal to be placed on top to give a more even heat.
Following the last edition of Open Canoeist several members inquired
after a supplier. There are a number of Bushcraft equipment suppliers
importing the cast iron variety but none as far as we are aware selling
the more portable aluminium kind.
There
has been a sighting of Dutch ovens, to the right design, being sold
in stores in the Southwest - Trago Mills in Devon. But these
are at best stocked intermittently.
